Lead-free tungsten jig heads
A jig head combines the weight, the hook and the lure keeper in one piece: it is the foundation of soft-lure fishing. In tungsten, about 1.7 times denser than lead, the head is more compact at the same weight: it transmits bites better, slides through cover and presents the lure more naturally. Every FiTU jig head is 100% lead-free, made of 97% tungsten, with BKK hooks and a chip-resistant coating.
Which jig head for which technique?
| Model | Weight | Hook | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Round Jig Head | 1.8 g to 14 g | BKK | All-round head: bottom work, straight retrieve or jigging, light rock fishing and all other predator fishing. |
| Round Jig Head Weedless | 1.8 g to 10 g | Texas BKK | Weed, branches and snags. |
| NED Head | 2.7 g to 5.3 g | BKK, stainless keeper | Ned rig: the soft lure stands upright on the bottom. Perfect winter rig. |
| NED Head Weedless | 1.8 g to 5.3 g | Texas BKK | Ned rig in weed and around snags. |
| Micro Jig Head | 0.8 g to 2.6 g | Mustad Finesse #4 to #10 | Finesse, light game and LRF: trout, chub, perch, small sea species. |
How to choose?
Three things matter: the shape (round, NED mushroom, micro), the weight (as light as possible while keeping bottom contact) and the hook size (matched to the lure). Our jig head buying guide covers it, and the Ned rig guide goes deeper on NED heads.
Why switch to tungsten?
Sensitivity, a compact profile and precise presentation. See tungsten vs lead and our article on the EU lead ban.
Frequently asked questions
What jig head weight should I choose?
Pick the lightest weight that keeps contact with the bottom for the depth, current and lure. In finesse fishing 1.8 g to 3.5 g is often enough; in deep and very deep water, rivers with heavy current and saltwater fishing, choose 7 g to 14 g. See our guide to choosing a jig head.
Which hook size should I choose?
For numbered sizes (#1, #2, #4…), a higher number means a smaller hook; for /0 sizes (1/0, 2/0, 3/0…), a higher number means a larger hook. Match it to the size and softness of the lure.
Why a tungsten jig head instead of lead?
Tungsten is about 1.7 times denser than lead, so at the same weight the head is more compact. That improves sensitivity and presentation and reduces snags. It is also 100% lead-free, ahead of the upcoming EU restriction. See tungsten vs lead.
Weedless or standard version?
The weedless (Texas) version shields the hook point so you can fish through weed and near snags. The standard version leaves the point exposed for easier hooksets in clear water.
